Planar Keep is an Android app for cataloguing a Magic: The Gathering collection with the phone camera. It has no accounts and no ads, and it only sends usage statistics if you turn that on. Your collection is stored on your phone. It only leaves the phone if you connect Google Drive, use Android’s own backup, or export it yourself.
The developer runs no server and never receives your collection or your photos.
What is stored on your phone
- Your collections, decks and the cards waiting to be filed.
- Your settings.
- The price history of the cards you own and of the value of your collection.
- Card images and prices already downloaded, so they do not have to be downloaded again.
- Usage counters: how many times some actions happened (for example, cards scanned). They contain no card names and never leave the phone. The optional statistics described below are separate.
All of this is in the app’s private storage. Uninstalling the app or clearing its data in Android settings deletes it.
Camera
The camera is used to read cards. Recognition runs on the phone itself. Camera frames are analysed and discarded: they are not sent to any server and they are not saved.
There is one exception. When a card is added “to confirm” because the app is not sure of its edition or finish, it keeps one photo of that card so you can compare it in Review. That photo stays in the app’s private storage. It is not added to your gallery, it is not included in any backup and it is not sent to Google. It is deleted when you confirm or remove the card.
Diagnostics from Google components
The app includes Google components that collect diagnostic and usage data about their own operation (for example device and app information, performance figures and error codes) and send it to Google. This does not include camera images, which are processed on the phone.
Usage statistics (optional)
This is off unless you turn it on in Settings, under “Usage statistics”. While it is off, the app does not contact this service and creates no identifier.
When it is on, the app sends an analytics provider, with servers in the European Union, which processes this data on our behalf: which features are used and when (for example “card scanned” or “collection created”, with the time) and whether there were errors, together with the phone model, the Android and app versions, the screen size, the language, the time zone and a random identifier for this installation. The provider receives your IP address when the app connects and derives the country from it; the IP address is not stored with the data.
Card, collection and deck names, what you search for, photos, audio and your Google account are never sent. It is used to learn which parts of the app get used and where recognition fails.
You can turn it off at any time in the same place: sending stops and the identifier is deleted from the phone.
Microphone
Planar Keep does not use the microphone and does not ask for permission to use it.
Requests to other services
- Scryfall. Card images and current prices are downloaded from Scryfall. Prices are refreshed automatically at most once a day, and never automatically on a metered connection, or whenever you ask. Scryfall receives the identifiers of the cards requested and the usual data of a network connection, including your IP address.
- News. When you ask for news, the app downloads the public feeds of several Magic news sites. Those sites receive the request and your IP address.
- Links. Links to Scryfall, Cardmarket, TCGplayer or a news article open in your browser. From there on, the privacy policy of that site applies.
Google Drive (optional)
You can use the app without connecting Google. If you connect it in Settings, Planar Keep keeps your collection in your own Google Drive, to back it up and to sync it between your devices.
What access is requested
- Access only to the files that Planar Keep itself creates in your Drive. The app cannot see the rest of your Drive.
- Your account identifier and email address, to show which account is connected and to make sure the same account is used on every device.
The app does not ask for your password, contacts or mail. Sign-in is handled by Google on your device.
What is uploaded
The names of your collections and decks, the cards in them with their finish, language and dates, the cards pending review, the daily value of your collections, the card prices of the last 90 days (the full history stays on your phone), and the device name shown by Android with a random identifier for each device, so you can tell backups apart. Photos, audio and usage counters are not uploaded.
How long it is kept
The “Planar Keep” folder in your Drive holds the sync state and, for each device, the three most recent daily backups plus one for each of the previous four weeks. Older backups are removed by the app.
How to stop and delete
- Disconnect a device in Settings. Your cards stay on that device and your other devices keep syncing.
- Remove the app’s access altogether in your Google Account.
- To delete the data in the cloud, tap “Delete cloud data” in Settings. It deletes your collection and its backups from your Google Drive, removes the app’s access and disconnects this device. It leaves a small marker with no cards or account data so that a device that was offline does not upload the collection again; your other devices stop syncing until you connect them again. Your cards stay on your phone. You can also delete the “Planar Keep” folder from Google Drive yourself.
Planar Keep’s use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. The data is used only to provide backup and sync to you. It is not transferred to anyone else, not used for advertising and not read by any person.
Files in your Drive are stored by Google under your own Google account and its terms.
Android backup
If backup is turned on in your Android settings, the system may copy your collections, price history and settings to your Google account, or transfer them to a new phone. This is done by Android, according to your system choices. Photos kept for Review, downloaded images and usage counters are not included.
Backups and exports you make
The app can save backup files to the Downloads folder of your phone, automatically or when you ask, and can export your collection as a file to share with another app. Those files go where you send them.
Support
If you write to support, we receive your email address and whatever you include in the message, and use it only to answer you.
The app can prepare a diagnostic report for support. You can read all of it before sharing it, and it is only sent if you choose to send it. It includes the app version and technical data about the device. It does not include your account, your collection or photos.
What Planar Keep does not do
- It does not sell or share your data.
- It shows no ads and contains no advertising libraries.
- It does not use what you scan, say or correct to train anything.
- It does not ask you to create an account.
Children
Planar Keep is not directed at children under 13.
Your choices
Because your data is on your phone and, if you chose so, in your own Google Drive, you can read, export and delete it yourself at any time: export or back up in Settings, delete by clearing the app’s data or uninstalling it, and use “Delete cloud data” for Google Drive. For anything else, write to us.
Changes to this policy
If the app changes what it does with your data, this page will be updated and the date at the top will change.
